Come join us on October 26th for our next Climate Talk! This time we will be discussing carbon taxes, specifically focusing on the Liberal Party’s recent proposal to institute a $10/tonne tax on carbon in 2018, which will incrementally rise to $50/tonne by 2022.
We are excited to announce that we will be joined by local activist and community leader Kevin Washbrook. Kevin currently serves as a director at Voters Taking Action Against Climate Change (VTACC), an organization which aims to address global warming by encouraging civic participation in politics, and providing voters with the necessary resources to stay informed of environmental issues.
The talk will begin with a brief presentation from Kevin regarding his take on the current carbon pricing initiative and its ramifications on Canada’s stance as an energy exporter. Following his presentation, we will open up the discussion to talk about the broader economic, political, and environmental implications of carbon pricing.
This talk is open to all UBC students. No prior knowledge is necessary, but we will be posting relevant information ahead of time that will help with any potential information gaps. We will also be providing fair trade coffee and cookies for all attendees, so be sure to come out, learn, and share your thoughts on this important policy decision!
